Sights
Kandia is a beautiful village inhabited by Arcadians. In the village center stands an impressive ruined tower, the tower of Aga.
Very close to the tower on the hill of Agia Eleousa are the ruins of the acropolis of Candia. The beach of Candia is one of the most special beaches of Argolida. It attracts vacationers of all ages and also has quiet corners and several beach bars that are preferred by younger visitors.
Nafpio
Just 16 km from Kandia is the capital of the regional unit of Argolis, Nafplion. It is one of the most picturesque cities in the country and was the capital of the Greek state during the period 1828 - 1833. It has been declared a traditional settlement.
Nafplion is known for Bourtzi, a small fortress built on an islet in the port for the Palamidi, a Venetian fortress that dominates the city, the Akronafplia, the other Venetian fort, on the homonymous promontory, and the place of the murder of John Kapodistrias.
According to Greek mythology to the present town site founded Nafplios Nauplia, which was fortified with Cyclopean walls. Archaeological findings prove the existence of the city of the Mycenaean years.
Nafplio is a popular destination of the inhabitants of Athens and the Peloponnese as it is a little of both regions. In the most beautiful buildings of the city is the palace Armansperg (residence of the viceroy of Greece Armanspergk) and the archaeological museum in Syntagma square. The city also operates branch of the National Gallery.
Epidaurus
Within 20 km you can visit the historic city of Epidaurus, famous for its ancient theater.
In a ravine, in 340 BC, the architect Polykleitos the Younger built, according to Pausanias, the theater of Epidaurus. Of all the ancient theaters, theater of Epidaurus is the most beautiful and best preserved. Destined for entertaining of patients has a capacity of 13,000 spectators. Divided into two parts. One which has 21 rows of seats for the people and the lower, with 34 rows of seats for the priests and rulers.
The exceptional acoustics, but also the very good condition in which retained contributed to the creation of the Epidaurus Festival that has been going on for many years.
Mycenae
Mycenae was an ancient city of Argolida near mountain Tritos and across from the bay of Argolis and away from the village of Kandia just 25 km.
During the second millennium B.C., Mycenae was one of the largest Greek culture centers, forming a powerful military fortress that dominated the greater part of southern Greece. The period of Greek history between 1600 BC to about 1100 BC called "Mycenaean" reported in Mycenae.
Today in this place is the small village of Mycenae and the ruins of the Acropolis, which always remind the distant and glorious times. From the preserved ruins today are the two royal Grave Circle A and B were part of extensive prehistoric cemetery in the west of the hill the palace, from which the excavation (pit graves) derives the bulk of surprising findings (most are gold and are characterized for their wonderful art), the treasure of Atreus (vaulted tomb), the vaulted tomb of Clytemnestra, the Lion Gate, the Royal Palace, the Temple, the North Gate and the Underground tank etc. Too many of the finds of excavations at Mycenae exposed at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and the new, modern, Mycenae Museum on the north slope of the citadel, causing the admiration of millions of visitors from all corners of the earth.
Argos
30 km from our apartments located Argos. It is considered the oldest city in Europe because of the existence of several archaeological monuments dating from the Late Bronze Age, when it was one of the greatest centers of the Mycenaean civilization.
Visiting Argos you can see many archaeological monuments such as the castle of Larissa, built in prehistorical times, which was repaired and expanded several times since antiquity and played an important historical role in the Venetian domination and Greek Revolution of 1821. The Ancient Theatre, capacity of 20,000 spectators and the ancient market, the Hellinikon Pyramid, dating back to late 4th B.C. and chamber tombs of the hill of Aspidos. It is also possible to visit the archaeological museum of Argos which hosts many findings dating from the prehistoric period.
